What Is a Percentage?
A percentage is a dimensionless ratio expressed as a fraction of 100, denoted by the % symbol. From the Latin per centum ("by the hundred"), it is the standard convention for expressing proportional relationships across finance, commerce, and statistics.
Mathematically, 45% = 45/100 = 0.45. In India, percentages govern virtually every financial instrument: PPF earns 7.1% per annum, equity mutual funds target 12 to 15% CAGR, GST is levied at 5%, 12%, 18%, or 28%, and home loan rates fluctuate by basis points (1 bps = 0.01%).
Proficiency with percentages is not optional for financial decision-making. It is prerequisite. Whether you are evaluating a salary hike, comparing FD rates, or reading a company's quarterly earnings report, percentage literacy determines how quickly and accurately you can make decisions.
The Percentage Formula
Every percentage problem reduces to the same relationship: P x V1 = V2, where P is the percentage in decimal form, V1 is the base value, and V2 is the result. Rearranging gives three solved forms:

Percentage Change vs. Percentage Difference
These two metrics are frequently confused but serve different analytical purposes. Percentage change measures directional growth or decline relative to a baseline: Change = ((New - Original) / Original) x 100. A Nifty move from 25,000 to 27,500 is a 10% increase; the reverse move is a 9.09% decrease.
Percentage difference measures the absolute gap relative to the average of two values: Difference = |V1 - V2| / ((V1 + V2)/2) x 100. It is symmetric and directionless: the difference between 10 and 6 is 50% irrespective of order. Use change for growth metrics; use difference for symmetric comparisons.

Percentage in GST Calculations
India's Goods and Services Tax uses four primary slabs: 5%, 12%, 18%, and 28%. Calculating GST on a product requires finding the percentage of the base price and adding it. A product priced at 1,000 at 18% GST costs 1,000 + (1,000 x 0.18) = 1,180.
The reverse calculation is equally common: extracting the pre-GST price from an inclusive amount. If a restaurant bill shows 1,180 and you know GST is 18%, the food cost is 1,180 / 1.18 = 1,000. Discount and Markup Percentages
A discount percentage is the reduction from the original price expressed as a percentage. A product marked 2,000 and sold for 1,400 carries a ((2,000 - 1,400) / 2,000) x 100 = 30% discount. The sale price is 2,000 x (1 - 0.30) = 1,400.
Markups work in the opposite direction: a 30% markup on a cost of 1,400 means selling price = 1,400 x 1.30 = 1,820. Note that a 30% discount on 2,000 (selling at 1,400) and a 30% markup on 1,400 (selling at 1,820) produce different prices. The base matters. This asymmetry is why businesses track both discount percentages and markup percentages separately.
Percentage Points vs. Percent
A percentage point is the arithmetic difference between two percentages. When the RBI cuts the repo rate from 6.50% to 6.25%, it is a 25 basis point cut (0.25 percentage points), not a 0.25% cut. The percentage change in the rate itself is ((6.50 - 6.25) / 6.50) x 100 = 3.85%.
This distinction matters in finance: if a mutual fund returned 12% last year and 15% this year, its return increased by 3 percentage points, but the year-on-year improvement is 25%. Conflating the two leads to misinterpretation of performance data, interest rate movements, and tax rate changes.

Debt-to-Income = Total Monthly EMIs / Monthly Income x 100. Most Indian lenders cap this around 40 to 50% when approving a new loan; a higher ratio reduces how much additional credit you can get approved for.
