What Is Stamp Duty?

Stamp duty is a statutory state tax levied on real estate title deeds and sale agreements in India under the Indian Stamp Act, 1899, ensuring legal validity and ownership registration in government land records.

In India, property stamp duty rates are governed individually by state legislatures. Consequently, stamp duty varies from 4% in Gujarat up to 8% in Kerala and Assam.

Additionally, many state governments provide a 1% to 2% stamp duty discount when property is registered in the name of a female owner to encourage female property ownership.
