What EPS Pension Is
EPS pension is the monthly pension paid by the Employees' Provident Fund Organisation under the Employees' Pension Scheme, 1995. You qualify after 10 years of eligible service and it starts from age 50 to 60.
Part of your employer's provident fund contribution funds it. Your own 12% goes to EPF, which the EPF Calculator projects separately.
EPS Pension Formula
Monthly EPS pension is pensionable salary times pensionable service, divided by 70. Pensionable salary is your average basic plus DA over the last 60 months, capped at Rs 15,000.
Monthly pension = (Pensionable salary x Pensionable service) / 70With 20 or more years of service, two years are added to pensionable service, up to a cap of 35 years. Rs 15,000 with 35 years gives the maximum of Rs 7,500 a month.
Pension by Years of Service
Pension rises with service until the 35-year cap. The table uses the Rs 15,000 ceiling and starts the pension at age 58.
| Years of service | Pensionable service | Monthly pension |
|---|---|---|
| 10 years | 10 years | Rs 2,143 |
| 15 years | 15 years | Rs 3,214 |
| 20 years | 22 years | Rs 4,714 |
| 25 years | 27 years | Rs 5,786 |
| 30 years | 32 years | Rs 6,857 |
| 35 years | 35 years | Rs 7,500 |
A longer career adds little after 33 years because of the cap. The Gratuity Calculator covers the other retirement payment tied to years of service.

Early and Deferred Pension
The pension falls 4% for each year you start before 58 and rises 4% for each year you defer, up to age 60. You can start from age 50.
| Starting age | Adjustment | Monthly pension |
|---|---|---|
| 50 | -32% | Rs 3,934 |
| 52 | -24% | Rs 4,397 |
| 55 | -12% | Rs 5,091 |
| 58 | None | Rs 5,786 |
| 60 | +8% | Rs 6,249 |
Starting at 50 pays Rs 1,852 a month less than starting at 58 for life. Compare that with what you would earn by investing the difference in the NPS Calculator.
Higher Pension on Actual Salary
Higher pension uses your actual average salary instead of the Rs 15,000 ceiling in the same formula. EPFO sets who can opt in and what contribution is due, so check the EPFO portal first.
| Average salary | Capped pension | Higher pension |
|---|---|---|
| Rs 30,000 | Rs 5,786 | Rs 11,571 |
| Rs 40,000 | Rs 5,786 | Rs 15,429 |
| Rs 60,000 | Rs 5,786 | Rs 23,143 |
Capped pension stays flat once salary passes Rs 15,000, which is why higher pension matters most to higher earners.
Worked Example: 28 Years of Service on Rs 15,000
A member with 28 years of service and the Rs 15,000 ceiling gets Rs 6,429 a month at age 58. Starting at 55 cuts it to Rs 5,657 and starting at 60 raises it to Rs 6,943.
| Step | Working | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Pensionable salary | Capped at Rs 15,000 | Rs 15,000 |
| Pensionable service | 28 years plus 2 for 20 or more | 30 years |
| Pension at 58 | Rs 15,000 x 30 / 70 | Rs 6,429 |
| Annual pension | Rs 6,429 x 12 | Rs 77,148 |
| Pension at 55 | 3 years early, 12% less | Rs 5,657 |
| Pension at 60 | 2 years deferred, 8% more | Rs 6,943 |
On a Rs 40,000 salary under higher pension, the same service pays Rs 17,143 a month. The employer EPS share at 8.33% rises from Rs 1,250 to Rs 3,332 a month.
EPS vs EPF: Where Your Contribution Goes
EPF builds a lump sum from both your and your employer's contributions, while EPS pays a monthly pension funded only by the employer's 8.33%. Your own 12% never goes to EPS.
| Item | EPF | EPS |
|---|---|---|
| Who pays in | You 12%, employer 3.67% | Employer 8.33% |
| Wage base | Basic plus DA | Capped at Rs 15,000 |
| What you receive | Lump sum with interest | Monthly pension |
| Minimum service | None to withdraw | 10 years for a pension |
The EPF Calculator projects the lump sum and the VPF Calculator covers voluntary top-ups. EPS pension is a separate income stream on top of both.
If You Have Less Than 10 Years of Service
With less than 10 years of service you do not qualify for a monthly pension, so you take a withdrawal benefit or keep the service alive with a scheme certificate. The calculator shows Rs 0 below 10 years for this reason.
A scheme certificate lets a new employer's service be added to your earlier service. That can carry you past the 10-year line instead of closing the EPS account.
How to Claim Your EPS Pension
You claim the pension from EPFO with Form 10D, and Form 10C applies if you have under 10 years. Check the current process on the EPFO portal before you apply.
- Check your service: log in with your UAN and read the service history and passbook. The EPFO login and passbook guide shows how.
- File Form 10D: apply for the monthly pension when you reach the age you want to start, from 50 to 60.
- Use Form 10C if short of 10 years: it covers the withdrawal benefit and the scheme certificate.
- Track the claim: follow its status as described in the EPFO claim status guide and keep your KYC and bank details updated.

Limitations of This Calculator
It uses one average salary. EPFO works from your actual wage history, including the lower ceiling that applied before September 2014.
It assumes whole years of service. EPFO rounds a part year of six months or more up to a full year.
Higher pension rules are set by EPFO. The calculator shows the formula result, not whether you are eligible to opt in.
