The Telangana Gruha Jyothi scheme gives eligible households free domestic electricity up to 200 units a month. A household that uses 200 units or fewer pays a zero bill, and there is no cash transfer.
Below: who is eligible, the documents and steps to apply, how the 200-unit rule works, and the rules for tenants, new houses and commercial connections.
What the Gruha Jyothi Scheme Is
Gruha Jyothi is a state scheme that pays for a household's domestic electricity up to 200 units a month. The Telangana government runs it, and the benefit shows up as a zero bill and not as money in a bank account.
News reports date the start of implementation to a Government Order of 26 February 2024. No order text was available for this page, so the rules below follow the official district page.
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| What you get | Zero bill up to 200 units a month |
| Cash given | No |
| Documents | Aadhaar and linked white ration card |
| Where to apply | Praja Palana Seva Kendram, MPDO office |
| Connections per family | One domestic connection |
| Commercial use | Not covered |
Who Is Eligible for Gruha Jyothi
The scheme benefits low-income households and ration card holders, and registration needs an Aadhaar card and a linked white ration card. The white card is the Food Security Card.
Some third-party sites mention an income ceiling, but the official page names none, so treat any figure you see elsewhere as unconfirmed.
Documents Required for Gruha Jyothi
You need a valid Aadhaar card and a linked white ration card, and a domestic connection that the distribution company has on record. Keep a recent electricity bill handy so you can quote the service connection number.
| Document | Why it is needed |
|---|---|
| Aadhaar card | Identity, linked to the ration card |
| White ration card | Food Security Card for eligibility |
| Electricity bill | Service connection number |
If your Aadhaar details are wrong or out of date, fix them first with the guide on Aadhaar card update. Ration card members also need e-KYC, which the ration card e-KYC guide explains.
How to Apply for Gruha Jyothi
You apply on paper through your local office and then submit at a Praja Palana Seva Kendram. The official district page gives the route below.
Get the form
Collect the application form from the Gram Panchayat, Gram Sabha or Municipal Corporation office.
Fill it in
Fill in the form and attach your Aadhaar card and linked white ration card.
Submit it
Submit it at the Praja Palana Seva Kendram at the MPDO office.
Check the connection
Make sure the connection is domestic and recorded in a household member's name.
Track the status
Check the application status on the Praja Palana website.
Keep the acknowledgement you are given, since it is your proof if the benefit does not appear on the next bill.
The 200-Unit Rule: What Happens at 200 Units and Above
A household that uses 200 units or fewer in a month pays a zero bill. Above 200 units, the official page says consumption is charged at the regular tariff.
| Units in a month | Bill | Source |
|---|---|---|
| 150 | Zero | Official page |
| 200 | Zero | Official page |
| 201 and above | Regular tariff | Official page |
| 201 and above | Full bill, not just the excess | News reports, unconfirmed |
The official page does not say whether the first 200 units are also billed once you cross the line. News reports say they are, and a scheme information site says the household may lose the free benefit for that billing cycle.
Check a bill from a month near the limit to see how your distribution company applies it. If a zero bill frees up cash each month, the Monthly Budget Calculator shows where it can go.
New Houses, Shifting and Rented Homes
A new house can apply once it has a valid domestic connection, and a family that moves can apply for a transfer or a fresh registration. Tenants who shift to another rented house can apply again if the new connection is domestic.
| Situation | Can you apply? |
|---|---|
| Newly built house | Yes, after getting a domestic connection |
| Shifting to a new house | Yes, transfer or fresh registration |
| Tenant moving to another rented house | Yes, if the connection is domestic |
| Second house of the same family | No, one connection a family |
| Shop or business connection | No |
What Gruha Jyothi Does Not Cover
The scheme covers domestic electricity only, up to 200 units a month, and gives no cash. Commercial and business connections are outside it, and so is a second connection of the same family.
Checking Status and Raising a Complaint
You check the application status on the Praja Palana website, and you raise bill problems with your electricity distribution company. Telangana has two, TGSPDCL in the south and TGNPDCL in the north.
News reports from 2024 describe the free supply being held back in some districts while an election code of conduct was in force. If your zero bill does not appear, ask whether a state order or an election rule is the reason.
Avoiding Scams and Third-Party Sites
Registration is free on the official route, so anyone charging you to apply is a warning sign. Many sites that copy scheme details are not official, and some carry old rules.
